Vintage (1955) Gibson J-45 Acoustic Guitar with Hard Shell Case
Vintage (1955) Gibson J-45 Acoustic Guitar with Era-Correct but Not Original Hard Shell Case
This is a really cool musical blast from the past that still has plenty of years left in the tank.
One of the iconic American guitars, the Gibson J-45 has been popular since its introduction in 1942 because of its balance of warmth, brightness and articulation. The slope-shoulder dreadnought design uses a spruce top, mahogany for the back, sides and neck, and rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. The head has a black finish, with a Gibson logo painted on; originally, from 1952 to 1945, there was also a banner reading ‘Only a Gibson is Good Enough’.
Checked by our in-house technician, the J45 has some moderate fretwear, especially on the treble side in first position.
There have been a few repairs and alterations to the J45as well.
The original tuning keys have been replaced with a set of gold Grover tuners. This process required a slight enlargement of the original holes to accommodate the new ones.
The bass-side edge of the top appears a bit darker due to a crack repair from some time ago. The area was likely sprayed and has thus aged a bit differently than the rest of the guitar.
There appears to have been some kind of trauma on the bass side of the guitar that was addressed but, again, creates an aesthetic blemish.
The rosewood bridge has been removed and possibly planed and reattached as there is an obvious ring surrounding it on the top.
The guitar has had a neck set at some point as well. Though the neck set appears to be good, there is a significant trace of over-glue along the back and inside of the guitar.
The bridge plate seems secure and the bracing is intact.
We are very sure that this guitar lived the majority of its life surrounded by heavy smoke as evidenced by some of the physical wear of the finish and coloration of the binding.
Please see ALL photos to view cosmetic condition.
