Look who shops at The Fret Shop: Brittany Howard from the Alabama ShakesFresh off the heels of their whirlwind tour of the U.S. and abroad, Alabama Shakes vocalist & rhythm guitarist, Brittany Howard, stopped by The Fret Shop to pick up her vintage Supro Clermont and an Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy stomp box to boot. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t yet heard Brittany sing, do yourself a favor and check out her sultry shades of 60’s soul on the Athens, AL-based band’s debut release, Boys & Girls.

Michelle Malone and Phil Weaver to perform at Flying Monkey

Michelle Malone and Phil Weaver to perform at Flying MonkeyWhat do the cities Nazareth, PA and Madrid, Spain have in common? They are the cities that produced Michelle Malone’s C.F. Martin HD-28 guitar and Phil Weaver’s Jose Ramirez Concert Classical guitar, respectively. On Friday, February 15th at the Flying Monkey Arts Theatre (2211 Seminole Dr. at Lowe Mill), you can hear both guitars in a intimate setting when these musicians perform a double-billed concert starting at 7:30pm.

This show has been a huge hit with past audiences, and this evening should prove to be no exception. Phil will open with flamenco, tango, Latin American and baroque guitar solos. Michelle, known for her slide guitar playing and signature soulful vocals, will perform her solo acoustic show featuring songs from the new album. Admission for the concert is $15, and a pre-show meal at Happy Tummy will be available. Further information is available at FlyingMonkeyArts.org.

Phil Weaver is The Fret Shop’s classical guitar instructor and a professor of guitar at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Among the current instructors at TFS, three of them—Antony Sharpe, Brian Hudson and Curtis Barkley—are former students of Phil’s, and have since become great players in their own right. Phil and Jon Sawa’s music video, “Danza” (set for release the week of the concert), is Phil’s performance of Costa Rican composer Edin Solis’ guitar solo from Pasaje Abierto, with footage shot in ten locations by Jon Sawa and his crew from Prototype Multimedia. To reach the central filming locale, the Granary, Phil had to climb (via rope) to and from the site with his guitar strapped to his back. This feat made even more remarkable by the fact that the filming was done after Phil’s career-threatening accident last year when he shattered his elbow and broke his wrist. Find out more about Phil’s many musical endeavors at PhilWeaverGuitar.com.

Critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Michelle Malone has received rave reviews in Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Billboard and Guitar Player magazine(s). The songs from Day 2, her 11th studio album, were written at her green kitchen table—coffee mug in hand—every morning for nearly a year. The album was produced by Shawn Mullins and a crew of exceptional musicians. Two of Michelle’s earlier CD’s were on the Grammy ballot, and her songs have been recorded by the Indigo Girls and Hannah Thomas, as well as appearing in motion pictures and television. James Trussart “SteelCaster”

This chromed-out custom bad boy is as smooth as quicksilver and twice as fast. It sports a chambered steel body that is amazingly light and resonant, and it sounds as unique as it looks. You simply must see it in person and play it for yourself to appreciate James’ work.
